The national Youth Day commemoration took place in Newcastle\, KwaZulu- Natal.In 1975 protests started in African schools after a directive from t he then Bantu Education Department that Afrikaans had to be used on an equ al basis with English as a language of instruction in secondary schools. T he issue\, however\, was not so much the Afrikaans as the whole system of Bantu education which was characterised by separate schools and universiti es\, poor facilities\, overcrowded classrooms and inadequately trained tea chers.On 16 June 1976 more than 20 000 pupils from Soweto began a protest march. In the wake of clashes with the police\, and the violence that ensu ed during the next few weeks\, approximately 700 hundred people\, many of them youths\, were killed and property destroyed. On 21 March 1960\, the community of Sharpeville and Langa t ownships\, like their fellow compatriots across the country\, embarked on a protest march to protest against pass laws. The apartheid police shot an d killed 69 of the protesters at Sharpeville\, many of them shot while fle eing. Many other people were killed in other parts of the country. The tra gedy came to be known as the Sharpeville Massacre and it exposed the apart heid government’s deliberate violation of human rights to the world.The democratic government declared 21 March Human Rights Day to commemorate and honour those who fought for our liberation and the rights we enjoy tod ay.Our Constitution is hailed as one of the most progressive in the worl d.
