The local municipality of Umhlabuyalingana is geographically located in the North Eastern confine of KwaZulu-Natal and is one of the six local municipalities that constitute the District of Umkhanyakude. 

The Municipality spreads for approximately 3621 km 2 in land magnitude has a rural classification of 99%, hence the referral to rural Municipality.

The major structuring elements of the municipality are the Pongola River along the western boundary, the road from Sikhamelele to Manguzi (east-west linkage), and the recently completed road (MR22) from Hluhluwe. It is the largest municipality of four in the district, making up a third of its geographical area.

The municipality is extremely rural, with informal settlements at Mbazwana and Manguzi. The area is influenced by the influx of people who migrate from Swaziland and Mozambique.

Main Economic Sectors: Community and social services (32.69%), general government (18.65%), finance (7.28%), transport (6.35%), trade and retail (10.15%), construction (5.99%), electricity (1.83%), manufacturing (5.62%), mining (3.13%). As contribution to GVA – Source IDP 2024/25
